Hope you are all well and wonderful, it’s been a while but so much is going on right now: from commissions, to full classes, to traveling, to creating an online course and developing a new in-person workshop. Exciting times so staying grounded in a very chaotic world is a challenge.
Creative Self Care has helped me over the past few busy months but trying to make it a priority in my daily/weekly routine can be a challenge. Creative self care helps recharge my essence so I can show up whole heartily for my family, my students and my unique creative voyage. There are no set formulas and everyone will have their own unique formula but this is what helped ground me.
Unplug & Get Outdoors: Soaking up the glories of mother nature as she sleeps, recharges, renews, blooms, dances and detoxes with her seasonal cycles is very powerful. No need to set off on expansive journeys just being outdoors and present in that moment without distractions in your local neighbourhood will be enough.
Hugging Trees & Dancing Barefooted: When I wrap my arms around a tree and connect my heart chakra through the bark down into the roots there is a connection to an old wise soul. This comforting embrace feels familiar and similar to that warm hug one gets form your grandmother. The glorious liberation and childlike freedom of dancing barefoot in the garden, on the beach or in the forest as if nobody is watching is a powerful soul charging tool. Go on give these a try!
Deep Cleansing Breaths: Breath into your throat chakra right down through your heart, solar plexus, sacral and finally deep into your root chakra. Breath out tightness, pain, stress, visualise this detoxing breath in your third eye chakra and opening your crown chakra to the glorious universe. Check The Seven Chakras for more information on chakra energy.
A Cuppa: Hard to beat your favourite brew in your favourite cup. Tea is a rich source of antioxidants but also contains a unique amino acid L-theanine. This increases alpha brain wave activity inducing relaxation without the drowsiness because tea also contains small doses of caffeine. Studies have shown that tea taken throughout the day increases creativity, improves learning and concentration, reduces anxiety and improves performace under stress. Both black and green tea have the highest sources of L-theanine so get the kettle on more often.
Music: Listening to all genres and styles of music is inspirational, my studio time entails swaying, dancing and getting lost in my happy studio playlist. Here is my Spotify playlist if you fancy a listen feel free Ciara’s Happy Studio
Doodle Doodle Doodle: This is my ‘go to’ warm-up exercise before any paint is poured. Make random marks, don’t force it, pop on some music let your mind wonder don’t look at the page. Random mark making taps into your subconscious generating ideas that you can never consciously come up with. Doodling is found to improve concentration and memory.
The above works for me however would like my self care practice to be more informed and become a daily/weekly habit rather than seeking it out when life is overwhelming. I have just stumbled upon this free creative self care course by the wonderful Claire Laraine from Creative Heart Healer http://www.creativehearthealer.com come join in and discover your own unique creative self care practice.
Do you have manicure, pedicure or new hair restyle, maybe you recharge near the ocean or deep in the forest, indulge in luxury foam bath with scented candles. Would love to hear what recharges your batteries? Please leave comment below Gratitude.
